Just some random observations during our hiring process. This might sting and hurt some Singaporeans but
1. The Burmese are really hungry for work and for opportunities. They source out our email and company profile using linkedin and other applications even though i posted on a Singapore government (for singaporean and prs) website for hiring.
2. Their resumes are sincerely pretty solid and extremely professional vs stuff that i get which is substandard.
3. While obviously our aim is to train our staff, give them opportunities and renumerate fairly regardless of race, language or religion, they (the Burmese) have decent expectations and you cannot help but want to hire them.
My CFO (Also born and bred Singaporean) said “Singaporeans are not poor enough yet we are forced to hire them. It is honestly just making us extremely uncompetitive. If we didn’t have this job-quota protectionist policy, i’m pretty sure half of Singaporeans will be out of a job”
While i am extremely Pro-local hiring (doesn’t matter if it is in Indonesia or Singapore), it’s really sad that I actually am starting to agree with him.
Maybe it is just nature and the rise and fall of a nation is cyclical. But it’s frankly quite sad to see this happening when i am interviewing.
I really am trying my utmost best to find that Singaporean gem in the rough. I understand that it is a different playing field given the financial commitments of a local vs foreigner and retirement \/ cost of living time horizon..
But as a business, i also owe a duty of care to my shareholders, investors and partners and it is really starting to get really hard to justify hiring locals at a premium over a foreigner.<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
